THE EARLY YEARS
Geechee Lion’s relationship with Music began in early childhood where he was exposed to the music of MOTOWN, STAX, GOSPEL/Spiritual, the BLUES, and SOUL and R&B Music popular with the Chicago Music scene. Geechee also had early exposure to the entertainment world, as a son of a DJ and a sometime Go-Go Dancer. Geechee started his collection of recorded music as a child. The first 45 record purchase was of “Ode To Billie Joe” by Bobbie Gentry. Among the first Albums purchased were "Get Ready” by Rare Earth, and “L. A. Woman” by The Doors. Those early years would also find him making some unusual purchases that reflected and foretold of diversity of tastes in Music. One was “Elvis’ Golden Records”. I was a great fan/admirer of Elvis as a singer and entertainer. My studio Engineer, Jerry Soto, of Soto Sound in Evanston, Illinois (May he Rest in Peace), called he Elvis when I was recording my first Album “Alone At Last”. The other purchase was a TV Special Album “The Good Times In Country Music”. This two-album set included the music of Various Artists such as Roger Miller, Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, Buck Owens, Hank Thompson, among others. I played this record often and can still hear some of the songs in my mind to this day. I grew up listening and enjoyed many genres of music through the teenage years. Reggae, Latin(Salsa and More), Pop, Hard Rock, African, You name it. An early talent for writing short stories and poetry developed into songwriting during the late teens, which were also my College years. The earliest songs, some of which were co-written with my Cousin, Bassist Melwyn Todd Fields, and Guitarist Gregory Phenix, included “Alone At Last”, “My Melody”, “Let’s Give It A Try”, “Movin To Memphis”, “Are You Sure” and “Dreaming”. There were a few Live Performances and a few stints as a DJ. The Group, known as The Soul Inflamers played together until the Mid 80’s, with the production and release of the Album “Alone At Last” and the EP “Rulers of The World”. Both of these collections were just digitally re-released this year of 2020. Songwriting continued until 1988/89 when lifestyle changes depressed the motivation and desire to play and write music.
Ironically the last Song written and copyrighted in 1988 was entitled “Wedding Day”, a song which is planned for release in 2022 under the Artist Name CHI LION SOUL.
2020- THE COMEBACK YEAR
Starting in Late 2017, with a Bucket List Trip to Los Cabos Mexico, traveling with a Chinese photographer, (ironically whose last name was CHI), and truly beginning in August 2018 with a three-week experience in Jojutla, Mexico in a neighborhood called EL JICARERO, I began to experience the beginning of a new inspiration to sing and be a musician again. It was August 28th when one of the All Hands And Hearts Staff members, a tall, comely Mexican woman named Ana Leticia Bedwell was
celebrating her birthday. In conversation, I mentioned that I used to actively be involved in singing and musicianship. Ana insisted that I sing a song for her birthday. Of course, I could not refuse her. Much of my music was accessible to me online so I chose two of what I considered to be my best songs, “CHERIE” and “CANDY LOVE”. I sang “Cherie” first. It was recorded with Ana’s phone, but unfortunately, the recording was mysteriously lost because of some damage to the phone. Luckily(as a matter of terminology), I sand CANDY LOVE using my own phone. I have that video saved for posterity and I plan
to put that on my website. That was a critical moment, and on that trip, I received much inspiration from several women I met there who hailed from Mexico and other countries. Special mention here to
Olivia(sweet young girl from France). It was Olivia Maillet with whom I shared my desire to sing again and do Karaoke every day on Facebook. I haven’t been doing it every day, but I did it quite often at
times. I also want to mention Sara(From El Jicarero with Special Love). She showed me what I received as natural, shameless affection during my brief times with her. That was something I have rarely experienced so it made a big impression. Also during that trip, I met my current Facebook Friend from the Phillippines, and Kundalini Yoga Teacher, Nick Daez. Nick introduced me to Kundalini Yoga, and, as Fate would have it, I would join a Kundalini Yoga-based organization in Chicago.
During my time associated with this organization, I met several creative, dynamic people, mostly Women, but some Men as well, who showed me a degree of friendship, and who provided the environment for personal healing and inspiration to sing and do music again. The founders of this organization provided the FUEL for the FIRE, and led me and provided a PATHWAY and OUTLET for CREATIVE EXPRESSION, referred to by the Teacher as “Raising the Kundalini”, which was a deep concept, but I think I get where they were coming from.
In 2020, the World is witnessing the release and explosion of creativity that was suppressed for decades. This year saw SIX MUSICAL RELEASES, and OVER 20 NEW SONGS Composed and Recorded, setting the stage for at least FOUR ALBUMS coming in 2021 and 2022. The albums “Imperial Soul” and “I Can’t Go Back” under the Artist Name IMPERIAL BROWN AND THE MILLION SELLER have already been released.
